Several times this season, the Riverland men's soccer team has scored late goals to get results. Yesterday, however, was a different story. The Blue Devils headed up to the Twin Cities on Wednesday afternoon for the second conference match against Anoka-Ramsey Community College. And it was two goals in the first eight minutes that got Riverland going on the way to a 3-0 away victory over the Rams.
Riverland opened the scoring just two minutes into the contest, as some good combination work between Kalab Tadesse (SO., Austin, MN) and Poe Reh (SO., Austin, MN) ended with Reh sending a through ball to Tadesse, which he cooly slotted home to give the Blue Devils an early 1-0 lead. That wouldn't be Riverland's only early score, however. Just six minutes later, Alex Ulrich (SO., Owatonna, MN) drove the end line and was fouled in the box by an Anoka-Ramsey defender, earning a penalty kick. Ulrich stepped up and took it himself, scoring to make it 2-0.
Riverland would add a third about ten minutes into the second half, as Ntsako Baloyi (SO., Pretoria, South Africa) sent a delightful through ball to Reh, who timed his run perfectly to beat the Rams center backs and streak in on goal. He calmly slotted the ball past the Rams goalkeeper to bring the score to 3-0.
The Blue Devils had another strong defensive game, holding firm and making several blocks. Goalkeeper Camden Williams (SO., Rochester, MN) was credited with four saves on his way to a second shutout in four days.
"It was a really strong performance from the team, both defensively and on the attack," said Riverland head coach Frank Spaeth. "We need to keep our focus and continue our good form to get where we want to be by the end of the season."
The win brings Riverland's record to 4-1-1 in conference and 5-2-2 overall. The Blue Devils travel to La Crosse, Wisconsin, on Sunday afternoon to face Viterbo's JV squad, and then will head to Worthington, Minnesota, next Wednesday for a conference match against Minnesota West.
